Tuesday Tremblor in Pomona

Here are shots of the damage on the northwest corner of SEcond and Oak, which is the Brodex Building at 1434 W. 2nd STreet, and also of the damage further down on 2nd Street, at Park. These photographs were taken by Richard E. Nunez of Pomona, Copyright 2008. Richard who lives down that way reports that there are lots of people out on the streets of downtown. We are no doubt going to be descended upon in a major way by the media, so let's hope that Pomona receives a decent portrayal as a City. Ms. Lois reports below that the library and City Hall report damage, as well.

A 5.4 earthquake was centered 7 miles or so south of us here in POmona today at just before noon. Just checking in to let you know that this goddess is alive and well. Big and I were standing in our backyard at the time of the quake, so we heard it as it rolled through the region. Mr. Big just looked at me like what the heck is happening? It lasted for a good 15 seconds and I could hear at least one object fall inside the house. It turned out to be only a small dresser mirror. The stumps of the California live oak that we were under barely even moved, but the ground we were on sure did, as did the house. For me, this rivaled my experience in San Francisco during the quake of 1989, which was a 7.1. Mr. Big was in tears once the shaking stopped, and when the news showed Disneyland, he was upset that Disneyland "had broken."

I was watching the TV for a bit, but I had to turn it off so as not to hear yet one more caller from our area reporting about their experience from inside their mobile home. No wonder people in L.A. think everyone east of the 605 lives in a trailer home park! Then the news showed a shot of the Pomona courthouse with a long line of alleged criminals waiting outside until they were let back in for their court date. Lovely.

Richard took today's photo of a brick building in Pomona which suffered quite a bit of damage from the quake. I believe this building is located on second street and oak, and backs up onto an alley. This building looks slightly different than the one I heard identified as being on fifth street on the news. The bricks fell down into the alley. Unlike most days, I guess today Pomona's alleyways actually lived up to their rough and tumble reputation.

Update: Here's a little info on that brick building from LAist.com.

Goddess, any visible damage in the immediate neighborhood. I didnt make it home for lunch, so of course I am nervous about the houses.

Hi G of P,

The library is not opening today. We had some damage with leaning book cases and fallen books. The case to the Goddess opened up! We were wondering if that was some sort of sign...

They sent us all home about 12:30pm. City Hall had more damage than we did. The glass doors at the entrance were off track and we heard some windows were broken. Tomorrow morning we will be cleaning it up and hopefully we will open on time tomorrow.

You haven't lived until you've been in an earthquake in a library! Watching book cases sway and the windows rattle until you think they'll explode...

I'm so glad Mr. Big wasn't here.

So Mr. Big was right, he was just whining that the library was broken too! And to think we planned to come to storytime today.

While this one was quite scary, at least there aren't chimneys littering all the lawns in Lincoln Park area like after the Upland quake!!!
