Stairway to Heaven

Here's some photographs of the ongoing progress over at the Fox Theater, slated to open at the start of 2009. As you can see, it's all about stairs at this point:

"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven"

I know I have not been posting regularly, but I'm glad ya'll have not given up on me and are still sending me emails. Thanks to all the little birds who sing in my ear about various Pomona goings on.

"In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven"

One such little bird named Ed from M-M-M-My Pomona sent an email about how the Pomona Baking Co. tested their ovens over the weekend, and plans to open next week once the vacationing inspector returns and signs off. Ed was even given a free sample of their rolls by the owner, which I think was Ed's plan all along.

"And when she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for."

Another little bird named Anduhrew from Student in Pomona blog sent me an announcement for the one year anniversary party for Bunny Gunner on Second Street at this SAturday's SEcond Saturday ARt Walk.

T-shirts and posters for the event were done by Pomona's own Rolo, whose work I am familiar with from his days in L.A.'s Japantown Arts District. Amy Maloof's Band "Falcon Eddy" will perform. Is she any relation to Sam?

"There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings"

As for the Goddess of Pomona mural on Second Street, well she is receiving a face lift this week, compliments of head artist Cheryl Bookout. And hey, Cheryl supposedly reads the Pomona blogs. That's her in the photographs below.

"If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen"

In the recurring tale of two Pomonas, there have been a series of local shootings over the past few weeks. You can read all about it daily in the Daily Bulletin.

Also in the "image problem" category, our Mayor climbs the political staircase to the assembly thanks to money from local trash companies.

As for me, I continue to believe in the day when Pomona will finally rise above that which keeps us down.

"Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying the stairway to heaven..."

Lyrics courtesy of England's Led Zeppelin. Photos courtesy of Pomona's Richard E. Nunez. Mayor mock-up - complete with crushed but still glittering soda pop cans - was sent to me by an anonymous emailer.

THE END

It sure looks like there is a ton of stuff to do on the Fox before one person steps a foot in there.
I hope it is a success, that theater deserves to be reborn and treated with gentle kindness after it's last decade or so.
