Elsewhere in town, there's other secrets

I'm talking about a secret grove that practically hides a secret house.

Driving on upper Towne this week, I noticed something I had not seen before. A chunk of property filled with groves of citrus and other trees, bordered on either side by businesses. I could barely see the grand yellow house peeking out from the back of the property. When I parked directly in front of the property, I saw that there was a actucally a narrow, tree-lined path leading all the way back to the home.

As serendipity would have it, later that same day I received these photos in an email from Pomona photographer Ren.

The grove and secret house are located just above Bonita, on the west side of the street. Look for them as you drive up Towne.

THE END And here is the rest of it.

If this is just to the north of the complex where the Vineyard Church meets, this is probably the old Honaker home. Lynn and Margary Honaker lived there since the 20's and maybe earlier. Lynn passed away a couple of years back at the age of 95 I believe. I was with him the night he died. He was a member of Pomona Presbyterian since 1929. A great man in every respect, he always humbly referred to himself as a "dirt farmer" and occasionally joked that he preceded not only the automobile, but also horses. "Back when I was young, we only had oxen!" he'd say with a twinkle in his eye.

His daughter may own it now.

Yes, that's exactly where it is, Pomona Joe. The house is being painted, which may be what caught my eye from the street. Ren may know more, as he actually walked back there. They told him that the house was being redone inside and invited him back once it was finished. I wonder if the property has changed hands?

...it was on the Old Home Tour a while back. Very pretty, inside and out!

I'm told the house was almost owned by the historical society, but that it's recently been sold to someone who cares about the history and will be taking good care of the home -- which is obvious from the nice, new paint job.

Hello everyone:
Yes - the house and property lately known as "Peppertree Lane" -was owned by the Honaker family for over 60 years. Margary (Naftel) ,who inherited the home from her grandfather CT ,and her husband Lynn lived there from 1944 until 2005, raising their garden and family and hosting many events for the community and their church . The house is now owned and loved by a new family and has been completely renovated over the last two years. It will be open to the public for the 24th Annual Pomona Heritage Home tour.
Home tour Tickets will be available from 11AM-5PM at the driveway at 2845 Towne Ave, or at the Ebell Club ( 585 East Holt Ave, Pomona) Sunday, October 19, 2008. Family members and knowledgeable docents from Pomona Heritage - including the architect and the "painter" -will be available to answer all your questions about the "secret" house and garden.Hope you can join us for a fantastic day
